The Little Rock Workforce Development Board (LRWDB) has made an impactful success story possible though its Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult Program.
Mr. Cook’s journey is a powerful example of how the WIOA Adult Program helps individuals overcome barriers to achieve long-term employment success. After becoming unemployed in June 2018 following the end of his assignment as a laborer with James Construction Group, Mr. Cook sought career support to rebuild his path to self-sufficiency. Despite facing multiple challenges – including a criminal background, lack of formal training, and limited employment prospects – Mr. Cook remained determined to improve his situation.
In June 2018, he applied for the WIOA Adult Program and was found eligible based on his receipt of state benefits, including SNAP. With guidance from his case manager, Mr. Cook completed the initial enrollment process and actively engaged in career services such as the Individual Employment Plan (IEP), the Woofound Assessment, ResCare Academy, and Resume Hero.
Mr. Cook expressed a strong interest in truck driving and was approved to attend the PB Truck Driving Academy in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in August 2018. During the three-week program, instructors described him as highly attentive and motivated. He successfully completed training in November 2018 and received job placement assistance.
Thanks to his perseverance and the support of the WIOA Adult Program, Mr. Cook secured employment and demonstrated a strong work ethic. His achievements did not go unnoticed—he was recently honored as Employee of the Year by Mayor Frank Scott Jr. and the City of Little Rock. This prestigious recognition highlights his transformation and dedication.
Mr. Cook’s success story reflects the mission of the WIOA Adult Program: to empower individuals to overcome adversity, gain in-demand skills, and achieve lasting employment. His story continues to inspire others on the journey toward economic independence and personal growth.
